Explanations in French  [Betsimisaraka] (Betsimisaraka ancien) Orthographié «  tougnounan » par Rochon, p. 280, qui écrit : « bois propre aux manches de sagaies ; fleurs en cloche ». Le vieux dictionnaire de Froberville reprend cette orthographe et écrit : « arbre des montagnes, à bois rouge ou jaune, brun, lourd, sert à la marqueterie et à faire des manches de sagaies ». Le baron de Mackau en 1818 préfère l'orthographe « tounounha » et parle d'un arbre de grosseur médiocre mais très dur avec lequel les Betsimisaraka font le manche de leurs sagaies. Tous ces témoignages sont donc convergents. Ce nom vient probablement de ce que ce bois est riche en noeuds [1.196]
