La chair du syncarpe, par contre, a un arrière goût amer et désagréable ; elle n'est pas consommée et l'on voit souvent au bord des sentiers ces gros fruits qui ont été écrasés par les passants. C'est peut-être l'origine du nom. Ils dégagent alors une forte odeur d'éther. [1.196]
