Explanations in English A tall grass or reed found in marshes, edgese of ponds, rivers etc. The plants growing in the water and shaken by it are used by the Betsileo in the form of vapour baths for malarial fever. This is given on the homeopathic principle of curing like, the fever causing people to shake. The bararata was formerly used in the ceremony of circumcision; it is yet used for various purposes. It is said that the Vazimba often dwell near it. Phragmites communis, Trin. Same as volotara and katsaroka. [1.2]

  [Betsileo, Merina, Sakalava, Sihanaka] Phragmites mauritianus Kunth (Poaceae). Ce roseau, très commun, est surtout utilisé pour la confection des claies, de clôtures et palissades légères délimitant les cours des habitations surtout en pays sakalava et sihanaka. Il est curieux de constater que phragmites vient précisément du grec phragmo = clôture, palissade. On en fait aussi des huttes servant d'abri aux petits animaux, des nasses pour la pêche, des flûtes, etc. Les jeunes pousses sont parfois broutées par les animaux, mais l'espèce n'est pas réellement fourragère (Bosser). La décoction des souches est administrée contre l'albuminurie. Serait un désinfectant rénal. [1.196]
