Explanations in French  [Betsimisaraka, Tankarana] (du français : « du poivre »). Nom du poivre en grains, préparé à partir des fruits de Piper nigrum L. (Piperaceae), introduit et cultivé. On en distingue deux sortes commerciales :
- le poivre noir : dipoavatra mainty, séché avec le péricarpe ;
- le poivre blanc : dipoavatra fotsy, débarrassée de son péricarpe et lavé avant le séchage.
Le poivre noir écrasé est incorporé à la farine de manioc pour faire des cataplasmes révulsifs ; appliqués dans les maladies pulmonaires, contre les douleurs articulaires, etc. [1.196]
