5 Jennifer Cole
6 Jennifer Cole conducts research on processes of 7 social memory and forgetting; she has recently 8 begun to focus on youth as a pivotal group through 9 which to understand the social dynamics of 10 intergenerational reproduction and change. Her 11 first book, Forget Colonialism? Sacrifice and 12 the Art of Memory in Madagascar (University of 13 California Press, 2001), was based on extensive 14 fieldwork in rural east Madagascar. In it, she 15 explored the social practices that mediated how 16 people remembered the colonial past and the 17 implications of memory practices on the 18 construction of postcolonial subjectivity. 19 While at Radcliffe, Cole will write a book 20 provisionally titled Sex, Money, and God: Youth, 21 Families, and the Intimate Politics of 22 Globalization. The book will examine the impact of 23 Madagascar's move from state socialism to 24 neoliberal reform on youth and families. In 25 particular, she will explore two competing 26 responses to recent social and economic reform: 27 those youth engaged in practices of prostitution 28 and transactional sex and those who join new 29 evangelical churches. 30 31 Cole has received fellowships from the 32 Wenner-Glen Foundation, the Fulbright Program 33 (Madagascar, 1992-1993; 2000-2001), and the 34 National Humanities Center. She received her 35 doctoral degree in anthropology from the University 36 of California at Berkeley and taught in the 37 department of anthropology at Harvard University 38 before joining the Committee on Human Development 39 at the University of Chicago, where she is 40 currently an assistant professor.
